A celebration of faith, resilience, academic brilliance, and transformative impact
In the storied halls of the University of Lagos, history was made during the 2024 Convocation. Samuel Akinade Badekale, a son of Mushin, Lagos, graduated with a flawless 5.00/5.00 CGPA from the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics. He was honoured as the Overall Best Graduating Student and Best Graduating Student in the Sciences — an achievement so rare that it stood alongside another peer who also attained the perfect score.
But Samuel’s story was only just beginning.
He has since been selected as the only Nigerian and West African recipient of the prestigious MemBioMed Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholarship in Biomembranes. Come September 2025, he will study across three world-class institutions in France, Italy, and Germany — carrying with him the hopes of a generation that refuses to let circumstance define destiny.
The Boy from Mushin Who Refused to Be Limited
Samuel grew up in Mushin, a community often misunderstood yet home to extraordinary minds. A year before he gained admission into UNILAG, another young man from the same area graduated as overall best student. That single story became the spark.
“I had always known Unilag to be a citadel of excellence that nurtures the best minds,” Samuel shared. “Seeing that possibility close to home fuelled my desire for academic excellence.”
His parents — pastors in the Redeemed Christian Church of God — anchored him in faith. He gives God all the glory. The discipline he witnessed in a local tutorial group, where students studied for twelve focused hours, further shaped him. By the time he entered UNILAG, Samuel already carried a clear vision: study hard, stay consistent, and aim for the very top.
The Habits That Built a Perfect 5.0
Maintaining a perfect CGPA demands more than intelligence — it requires intentional systems. Samuel’s approach was both practical and deeply spiritual:
- He studied primarily during the day because lack of sleep affected his entire rhythm.
- After every topic, he drilled past questions. Anything less than mastery sent him back to the material.
- He created grade sheets at the beginning of each semester, prayed over them, and kept a vivid mental picture of the results he wanted.
- He taught others. Explaining concepts forced him to simplify and truly understand.
- He attended classes diligently, sought guidance from seniors, and leaned on family support — especially when French in his second year threatened his streak (his parents quickly arranged a tutor; he finished with an A).
When the weight of a perfect CGPA began to trigger imposter syndrome and social anxiety, Samuel did something remarkable: he turned his struggle into service.
From Personal Pain to Collective Healing
In 2022, selected as a Millennium Fellow from over 31,000 applicants worldwide, Samuel co-founded Students’ Mental Health Advocates. The initiative partners with UNILAG’s counselling unit to raise awareness about burnout, anxiety, and student wellbeing through orientations, outreaches, and safe spaces.
He also co-founded the Skill Up initiative, equipping secondary school students in Mushin with digital skills and bringing successful professionals from the community back home to inspire the next generation. Together with a former best-graduating student, they donated textbooks to 82 pupils in the area — living proof that Mushin can produce excellence that thrives anywhere.
Leadership That Extends Beyond the Campus
Samuel’s influence now spans continents in vision and impact:
- TEDxIdiAraba Licensee & Lead Organizer (2024–2025): He secured the first-ever TEDx license for Idi-Araba and is currently leading a team of over 300 volunteers under the powerful theme “Rise Above” — curating speakers, forging partnerships, and creating a platform for local and global change.
- Research experience at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Redeemer’s University, and HackBio (where he applied Python, machine learning, and bioinformatics tools to genomic data).
- Multiple awards, including the Vice Chancellor’s Award, Top 8 External Young Scientist of 2024 (NIMR), Ogun State Education Ambassador, Federal Government Scholarship, and several departmental and faculty prizes.
The Erasmus Mundus Moment
When the news of his Erasmus Mundus selection arrived, Samuel was overjoyed. Biomembranes had been his passion since third year. The opportunity represents far more than personal advancement — it is a chance to gain world-class training, collaborate with leading experts, and return equipped to contribute to science and healthcare in Africa.
“It is both humbling and bittersweet,” he reflected. “Humbling because this recognition on such a prestigious international platform is an incredible honour. Bittersweet because it highlights the limited representation of talented students from Nigeria and West Africa in opportunities like this. That reality only fuels my determination to excel, represent my community with pride, and inspire others from the region to aim higher.”
Timeless Wisdom for Every Student
Samuel’s message to young people is both simple and profound:
“Dream boldly because, with God, nothing is impossible. Set clear goals, pray, and put in the work. Be diligent, study hard, attend lectures, use textbooks and online resources, and never hesitate to seek help. Prioritise your time, stay disciplined, and remain consistent. Success will follow.”
He is living, breathing evidence that education is not a scam.
A Legacy Still Unfolding
Samuel Badekale’s story is not merely about a perfect CGPA or a prestigious scholarship. It is about a young man who refused to let his zip code, background, or temporary struggles write his final chapter. It is about faith that sustains, discipline that delivers, and a heart that turns personal victories into platforms for others.
As he prepares to cross oceans in pursuit of knowledge that could one day transform lives, we celebrate not just the scholar — but the servant-leader, the community champion, and the beacon of what is possible when excellence meets purpose.
To every young African reading this: Your story can be next. The same God who carried Samuel from the streets of Mushin to laboratories across Europe is still in the business of lifting the determined.
