Exciting news for the academic community and prospective students: The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has officially established two brand new academic schools. In a strategic move to consolidate its core functions of teaching, research, and community service, FUTA welcomes the School of Architecture and the School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE).

Here is a closer look at what these new schools mean for the university and the future of education in Nigeria.

Designing the Future: The New School of Architecture

Previously housed as a department under the School of Environmental Technology, Architecture at FUTA has now been elevated to a full-fledged school. This major structural change is a direct response to the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) 2023 directive, which required Nigerian universities to migrate from the old Benchmark for Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) curriculum to the new Core Curriculum for Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).

Under the new CCMAS guidelines, the single discipline of Architecture has been unbundled to offer specialized, industry-relevant training. The newly established School of Architecture will now feature six distinct programs:

  • Architecture
  • Architectural Science Technology
  • Furniture Design
  • Interior Architecture Design
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Naval Architecture

The Director of Academic Planning at FUTA, Professor Oluwaseyi Awodele, highlighted the significance of this upgrade:

“Upgrading to a school reflects recognition of the importance and complexity of the discipline. With a school status, there can be greater opportunities and autonomy for research tailored to the specific needs of architectural practice and built environment advancement in Nigeria and beyond.”

Prof. Awodele further noted that this autonomy will foster enhanced collaboration with other disciplines both within and outside the university, paving the way for comprehensive and integrated solutions for the modern built environment.

Empowering Future Educators: School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE)

The launch of the School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE) marks a strategic milestone for FUTA’s academic growth, aligning perfectly with the vision of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji.

This new school serves two primary functions: providing a proper administrative home for education-based courses and addressing vital national workforce shortages.

Key Highlights of the SSTE:

  • Streamlined Administration: The SSTE will house existing programs such as Education Technology (EDT) and Library Information Science (LIS). This resolves NUC’s concerns regarding academic affinity and paves the way for the launch of the highly anticipated Industrial and Technology Education (ITE) program.
  • Addressing National Needs: Nigeria faces a critical shortage of qualified STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) teachers and skilled vocational workers. The SSTE is directly aligned to close this gap.
  • Technical Teachers Training Programme (ITTP): Through the new school, FUTA is keying into the government’s recently launched ITTP. This initiative supports a fully funded, one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). It is specifically designed to equip teachers with essential skills in fields like information technology, metalwork, agriculture, and other vital vocational areas.

By launching these two new schools, FUTA continues to prove its dedication to academic excellence, innovation, and national development. Whether you are an aspiring architect looking to specialize in naval or landscape design, or a future educator passionate about STEM and vocational training, FUTA is paving a clear, modernized path for your success.
