2027 Commonwealth PhD Scholarships for Developing Countries
Fully funded doctoral study in the UK — tuition, airfare, and a monthly stipend of up to £2,000 — for graduates from least developed Commonwealth countries and vulnerable states.
If you’re a graduate from a developing Commonwealth country dreaming of doctoral study in the UK, the 2027 Commonwealth PhD Scholarship is one of the most generous fully funded opportunities available this year. Administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in partnership with UK universities, it’s built specifically to support world-class research from candidates who couldn’t otherwise afford to study in the UK.
What Is the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship?
Funded by the UK Department for Education, the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship supports full-time doctoral research with real-world development impact. It operates under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) and reflects the UK’s long-standing commitment to strengthening academic and research capacity across Commonwealth nations.
Beyond funding individual scholars, the programme is designed to build lasting research and teaching capacity in participants’ home countries — while also encouraging collaboration between UK institutions and high-calibre international researchers.

Who Should Apply?
The scholarship targets high-quality graduates with genuine potential to lead — not just complete a PhD. To be eligible, you must:
- Be a citizen of, or hold refugee status in, an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
- Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
- Be available to begin studies in the UK by September 2027
- Hold at least an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree — or a lower second plus a relevant postgraduate qualification
- Not already be registered for a PhD or MPhil-to-PhD in the UK or your home country before September/October 2026
- Be genuinely unable to afford UK study without this funding
- Submit all supporting documents in the required format
What the Scholarship Covers
This is one of the most comprehensive PhD funding packages available anywhere. Each award includes:
- Approved airfare to and from the UK at the start and end of the award
- Full tuition fees, covered entirely — no cost to the scholar
- Monthly stipend of £1,712, rising to £2,000 for scholars at London universities
- Warm clothing allowance, where applicable
- Study travel grant for research-related travel in the UK or abroad
- Fieldwork support, including one economy return airfare where approved
- A paid mid-term visit home during the scholarship
- Child allowance for single parents, widowed, or divorced scholars with children under 16 living with them in the UK
- Disability support, with a full needs assessment offered on request
Required Documents
Applications must include the following, uploaded in the required format:
- Proof of citizenship or refugee status — a valid passport or national ID showing photo, date of birth, and country of citizenship
- Full academic transcripts, including current courses, with certified translations if not already in English
- References from at least two people, signed and on institutional letterhead (or a verifiable email)
- A supporting statement from a proposed UK supervisor at one of your named institutions
- An unconditional offer — or one conditional only on finance — from every institution named on your application
Incomplete applications, including missing transcript pages, will be considered ineligible — so double-check every document before submitting.
How to Apply
Applications go through the CSC’s online system only — no paper or email submissions are accepted. Two things happen in parallel:
- You apply directly to the CSC through its online application system.
- You also apply through a nominator — either your country’s national nominating agency, a selected university, or an approved NGO or charitable body.
Applicants are advised to complete and submit applications as early as possible, since the online system gets very busy in the days leading up to the deadline.
Ready to Apply?
Applications for the 2027 Commonwealth PhD Scholarship close on October 20, 2026. Start gathering your documents and confirm your nominator route today.
