The Road to First Class: Moses Adeoye’s Story of Discipline and Excellence

Moses Adeoye

Achieving academic excellence requires more than just attending classes; it demands strategy, resilience, and unwavering clarity. Moses Adeoye exemplifies this, having graduated with first-class honors in Agricultural Engineering from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in 2025. Admitted in 2019, Moses reflects on a highly rewarding undergraduate experience built upon a foundation of deliberate, consistent choices.

Here is an inside look at the decisions, challenges, and ultimate triumphs that defined his path to becoming a national top student.

Laying the Foundation: The 100 Level Strategy

Moses admits he did not begin his university journey with a grand master plan. However, an early decision to join a campus fellowship before classes even resumed provided him with vital guidance for navigating life as a fresher.

Setting a strict goal to focus entirely on academic excellence, he sought advice from senior fellowship colleagues and department peers on effective study habits and time management. Rather than relying solely on raw intellect, Moses prioritized consistency, resulting in an outstanding 4.51 GPA in his first semester and a 4.57 GPA in his second.

Expanding Horizons: Navigating 200 and 300 Level

Carrying his academic momentum into 200 level, Moses recognized that university life offered more than just the pursuit of good grades. He began exploring extracurricular activities and developing skills outside of his standard coursework, which opened his eyes to new possibilities.

The 300 level proved to be his most demanding year. Taking on the role of Technical Unit Coordinator in his fellowship, he suddenly found himself juggling leadership duties, skill development, and his rigorous academic load. Navigating late-night meetings alongside preparation for next-day tests stretched him thin, but it also catalyzed massive growth. Through this pressure, he expanded his network, built technical competencies, and discovered leadership skills he never knew he possessed.

Finding Clarity and Global Recognition: 400 and 500 Level

During his 400 level, Moses discovered his true passion within his field. This vital clarity helped him secure a six-month internship at an agritech company, where his specific interest in digital and precision agriculture truly flourished. He transitioned from learning abstract theories to witnessing firsthand how technology could transform agriculture in real-time.

His final year seamlessly integrated all his gathered knowledge and experiences. He broadened his global perspective by completing an internship in the United States. For his final thesis, he merged his dual passions for agriculture and technology to work on the Digital Soil Mapping of Akure. This relentless dedication culminated in a massive validation of his hard work: Moses was recognized as the National Best Student in the Soil and Water Engineering option in Nigeria for 2025.

Overcoming Academic and Personal Hurdles

The road to a first-class degree was paved with real challenges. Moses confronted several major obstacles along the way:

  • Navigating Rejection: Moses faced persistent rejections during scholarship applications, initially securing only one minimally funded opportunity. By researching his application flaws, seeking counsel, and maintaining persistence, he eventually landed his U.S. internship.
  • Balancing Commitments: Overwhelmed by his 300-level responsibilities, he learned to stop trying to do everything and instead mastered effective time management, delegation, and prioritization.
  • Conquering Academic Slumps: When he unexpectedly began receiving ‘B’ grades in major 3-unit courses, he felt like he was failing. A simple, clarifying conversation with a lecturer provided the exact strategy he needed to adjust his approach and solve the problem.

Core Principles for Undergraduate Success

Looking back on his journey, Moses shares essential advice for students aiming to maximize their university experience:

  • Embrace Holistic Growth: University is designed to build you intellectually, academically, and character-wise; it is not just about securing a degree.
  • Protect Your Time: Only engage in extracurricular activities that genuinely align with your aspirations, values, and goals.
  • Leverage Your Education: Never buy into the narrative that education is a scam. Education holds global value when you use it to build skills, think critically, and create your own opportunities.
  • Curate Your Circle: Surround yourself with a network of inspiring, like-minded friends who share your vision and push you toward your goals.
  • Speak Up and Trust God: Never suffer your struggles in silence; speak up to people you trust when things get difficult. Most importantly, back your diligent efforts with faith, trusting that God’s plan will guide and strengthen you.
