Graduating from the rigorous Nigerian academic system is a massive accomplishment in itself. But graduating with a flawless 5.0 out of 5.0 Master’s grade? That takes dedication, brilliance, and a relentless pursuit of excellence to an entirely different stratosphere.
On November 18, 2023, during the 33rd convocation ceremony of the esteemed Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), one graduate stood out in a sea of academic gowns: Alex-Samuel Comfort (formerly Comfort Oladejo). Her story is not just about passing exams; it is a masterclass in academic consistency and groundbreaking scientific research.
Here is a closer look at the inspiring journey of this trailblazing biochemist.
🧠 A Track Record of Academic Brilliance
Comfort’s recent achievement is the crowning jewel in an already glittering academic resume. Her educational journey at FUTA is a testament to her enduring pursuit of knowledge:
- M.Tech (Applied Biochemistry) – Summa Cum Laude (2021/Convocated 2023): She finished with a perfect 5.0 CGPA. Her master’s thesis, “Evaluation of Redox and Cholinergic Effects of Aidan (Tetrapleura tetraptera Taub.) Leaf Extract in Lithium-Pilocarpine-Induced Status Epilepticus in Rats,” showcased her deep dive into therapeutic biochemistry.
- B.Tech (Biochemistry) – Magna Cum Laude (2017): Her undergraduate years were equally stellar, culminating in a thesis that explored the hepatoprotective properties of specific flavonoids in intoxicated rats.
🔬 Making Waves in Scientific Research
Comfort isn’t just absorbing knowledge; she’s actively contributing to the global scientific community. Alongside her intensive studies, she has co-authored significant research papers that reflect her commitment to finding real-world solutions through biochemistry:
2022 Publication: Tetrapleura tetraptera curtails oxidative and proinflammatory biochemical events in lithium-pilocarpine model of status epilepticus. (Published in Advances in Traditional Medicine).
2018 Publication: Catechin, quercetin, and taxifolin improve redox and biochemical imbalances in rotenone-induced hepatocellular dysfunction… (Published in Pathophysiology).
🤝 The Village Behind the Vision
Behind every 5.0 CGPA is a late-night support system. Comfort’s extraordinary milestone was fueled by a strong community.
In her graduation reflections, she extended profound gratitude to God for the overarching success, as well as to her partner, Samuel Alex, and her in-laws for their unwavering support. She also gave a heartfelt shoutout to her parents and her siblings, Wumi and Blessing Oladejo, who stood by her from day one.
Academically, she highlighted the tireless guidance of her Honorable Supervisor, Professor Akinmoladun Afolabi, who mentored her through both her undergraduate and master’s degrees. She also credited her project mates—Omowumi Ogundele, Abimbola, and Jesutola—alongside her colleagues, friends, and lecturers. Special recognition was also given to the DLCF FUTA family for the vital spiritual support that kept her grounded.
🚀 What’s Next: A Non-Ending Journey
During the convocation, FUTA’s Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry, Professor Adekule T. Oladiji, noted that “Excellence is a non-ending journey.” Comfort has taken these words to heart. While she is taking a moment to celebrate “Excellence at the Peak” and the official completion of her Master’s program, she is already looking forward. For her, a perfect 5.0 isn’t the finish line—it’s just the starting point.
Currently, Comfort is a PhD student and Graduate Teaching Assistant at Baylor University – College of Arts & Sciences!
Please join us in congratulating ALEX-SAMUEL COMFORT, B.Tech (Biochemistry), M.Tech (Applied Biochemistry), Ph.D.-in-view. 🎓💯 The future of biochemistry is in very capable hands!
