Every so often, we encounter academic and professional journeys that serve as a perfect blueprint for dedication, versatility, and excellence. Esther Samuel’s trajectory from a brilliant undergraduate in Nigeria to a licensed Math Educator and Data Analyst in the United States is exactly that kind of story.
As a Financial Professional, a Google Certified Data Analyst, and the Founder of Matimatis, Esther perfectly blends educational leadership with cutting-edge technical expertise. Her story is one of breaking boundaries and setting new standards.
Making History: The FUTA Days
Esther’s foundation was built on exceptional academic rigor. A proud alumna of St. Louis Grammar School, Akure (Class of 2012), she proceeded to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) to study Industrial Mathematics.
Her time as an undergraduate was nothing short of historic. Graduating with an outstanding 4.73/5.00 GPA, Esther made national headlines in 2017 when she emerged as the Best Female Mathematics Student in Nigeria. Facing off against peers from over 32 higher institutions at the National Mathematics Competition for University Students (NAMCUS) in Abuja, she secured a gold medal, amassing the highest points among all female participants.
“FUTA has once-again achieved another feat which has further established it as a centre of excellence… The success of the students is premised on the Management’s relentless effort at making FUTA a leading University in Nigeria as well as globally, and the students’ resilience and hard work.” — FUTA Management (2018)
Her brilliance earned her the prestigious Federal Scholarship Board award in 2017 and the FUTA Excellence and Productivity Award in 2018.
Taking on the Global Stage
With a solid foundation in industrial mathematics, Esther transitioned to the global academic stage. She pursued and earned her Master’s degree in Mathematics from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Ohio. During her time there, she not only elevated her academic profile but also dedicated herself to uplifting others as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, tutoring undergraduates and driving enhanced student performance.
Her excellence at CWRU was recognized when she was named a Graduate Fellow of the Department of Applied Mathematics, Mathematics and Statistics in 2022.
A Multidisciplinary Powerhouse
What truly sets Esther apart is her incredible ability to pivot and integrate her mathematical prowess into the worlds of technology and finance.
- Data Science & Tech: Esther is highly skilled in MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, and R. She has applied these skills in real-world scenarios, from preprocessing data and crafting visualizations as a Data Analyst Intern at Cognifyz Technologies to mapping geographic coordinates as a Public Interest Technology Fellow with the Cuyahoga County GIS Department. She also previously demonstrated her versatility by working as a Web Developer for Netparks System LLC in Abuja, deploying critical updates and troubleshooting technical issues.
- Financial Analytics: In 2022, she took her analytical skills to Europe, participating as a Financial Analyst at the highly competitive Gene Golub SIAM Summer School (G2S3) on Financial Analytics at the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI).
Mentorship and Impacting the Next Generation
Beyond the complex equations and lines of code, Esther is deeply committed to human capital development. Her passion for teaching has been a constant thread throughout her career.
It started during her undergraduate years as a Math Tutor at the Deeper Life Campus Fellowship in Akure, where she helped struggling students achieve significant grade improvements and mentored new tutors. Today, she continues that mission in the United States. After an impactful year as an Upper School Math Teacher at Hawken School, she currently serves as a full-time Math Teacher at Oakmont Education in Cleveland, Ohio.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Esther Samuel’s story is a powerful reminder that with resilience, hard work, and a passion for knowledge, there are no limits to what can be achieved. Her transition from a national gold medalist in Nigeria to a multifaceted educational, tech, and financial professional in the US continues to inspire upcoming mathematicians, scholars, and tech enthusiasts worldwide.
