A Scholarship Born from Knowing What Stands in the Way
There is a particular kind of cruelty in being talented enough, disciplined enough, driven enough—and still being kept out. Not by academic performance. Not by lack of ambition. But by the price of a standardized test, a stack of application fees, or the absence of someone who has walked the path before you and can show you the way.
Dr. Michael Taiwo understood this intimately. And so, in 2019, he did something about it. He founded the Michael Taiwo Scholarships (MT Scholarships)—a Los Angeles-based non-profit with a simple but radical premise: that cost and access should never be the reason a brilliant student from a developing country fails to reach the world’s best graduate programs.
Today, we celebrate the man and the movement he built.
More Than a Check—A System of Support
The MT Scholarships target the unglamorous barriers that sit between a deserving student and their dream graduate school: exam registration fees for the GRE and TOEFL, graduate school application fees, and credential evaluation costs. These are not trivial sums for students from low-income households in developing countries—they can represent months of a family’s income.
But financial support is only half the story. The MT Scholarships pair every scholar with experienced mentors who guide them through one of the most competitive and opaque processes in education: gaining admission to top global universities. For many scholars, this mentorship is the difference between a letter of rejection and a letter from Princeton.
“With the MT Scholarship, I found the guidance and support to knock on eight doors and one opened to Princeton.”
Damola Olaitan — Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria
The model is elegant in its logic: money removes the financial barrier; mentorship removes the knowledge barrier. Together, they create a genuine pathway where none existed before.
Impact
Seven Years. Hundreds of Lives. Ripples Still Spreading.
Since its founding in 2019, the MT Scholarships have empowered hundreds of low-income scholars to secure admission into top graduate programs across the world. These are not abstract numbers—they are engineers, researchers, doctors, and community leaders whose trajectories have been permanently altered.
Year Founded: 2019
Scholars Supported: 100s
Universities Reached: Global
The impact does not stop with the scholars themselves. In the United States, MT scholars pay it forward—mentoring and tutoring minority middle and high school students to pursue STEM pathways and consider college as a real possibility. The scholarship creates not just one success story, but an entire chain of them.
Scholar Voices
In Their Own Words
The truest measure of any scholarship is the lives it reshapes. Here are a few of the voices behind the numbers:
“I had the grades, the medals, the dream, but not the means. The MT Scholarship changed that.”
Emmanuel Nworie
University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria
“The MT Scholarships have not only elevated me professionally but have also enriched me personally.”
Anu Sharma
Gujarat Technological University, India
“The MT Scholarship gave me the chance to pursue a lifelong ambition.”

Dr. Michael Taiwo: The Vision Behind the Mission
Behind every transformative institution is a person willing to believe that things can be different. For the MT Scholarships, that person is Dr. Michael Taiwo—whose conviction that talent knows no geography has powered this organization from a founding idea to a global impact vehicle.
His mission is straightforward and uncompromising: support high-potential students from developing countries in accessing global graduate education through funding and mentorship. His vision is even bolder: a world where no talented student is held back from advanced education due to financial or systemic barriers.
Dr. Taiwo in His Own Words
The work is deeply personal for the founder—rooted in gratitude, fueled by the belief that investment in human potential is the highest form of generosity.
“I am grateful for the investment we make in the lives of very bright but indigent students. Kids who never stood a chance now at Ivy Leagues. Thank you to our donors. Your gift is rewriting the narrative that folks from developing countries can’t compete at the very top.”
— Dr. Michael Taiwo, @AskMichaelTaiwo
Why It Matters: Rewriting Who Gets to Compete
The global graduate admissions process was not designed with students from developing countries in mind. It assumes access to testing centers, application funds, advising services, and networks of people who have already navigated the system. For students in Lagos, Nsukka, Ahmedabad, or Dhaka, these assumptions are often invisible walls.
What makes the MT Scholarships distinctive is the refusal to treat these walls as natural. The organization goes after the specific, concrete barriers—test fees, application costs, credential evaluations, and the absence of guidance—and dismantles them one scholar at a time.
The result is a growing cohort of brilliant graduates from developing countries who are not just attending world-class universities, but thriving in them—and returning the favor by lifting others up behind them.
“Your gift is rewriting the narrative that folks from developing countries can’t compete at the very top.”

How You Can Be Part of This Story
The MT Scholarships run on the generosity of donors and the commitment of mentors. If you are a graduate with the capacity to guide a deserving student through the admissions gauntlet, your time is a gift that compounds across generations. If you are in a position to donate, your contribution directly covers the fees that stand between a brilliant student and their future.
Applications for scholarships are open. If you are a high-potential student from a developing country with graduate school ambitions and limited means, the MT Scholarships were built for you. You belong on the world stage. Dr. Taiwo and his team are here to help you get there.
