Celebrating Excellence: Dr. Babajide Milton Macaulay – A Beacon of Academic Leadership, Innovation, and Impact Across Africa

Dr. Babajide Milton Macaulay

From Graduate Assistant to Senior Lecturer at FUTA. Three-time Commonwealth Scholar. Researcher whose work became law. Founder of platforms empowering 250+ African scholars and connecting researchers to resources. Pioneer of waste-to-wealth solutions. Author. Mentor. Leader.

This is the story of Dr. Babajide Milton Macaulay — a man whose journey from humble beginnings to continental influence embodies the very best of African excellence, resilience, and service.

14 Years of Unwavering Commitment to FUTA

On 12 February 2012, Babajide Milton Macaulay joined the Department of Biology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) as a Graduate Assistant. Today, he stands as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology, having risen through every rank with distinction.

He has remained loyal to one institution because FUTA gave him “a healthy environment to thrive. No micromanaging. No institutional barrier.” In return, he has poured his heart into the university.

His impact is measurable:

  • Taught 3,000+ undergraduate students and 71 Master’s students
  • Supervised numerous final-year and postgraduate research projects
  • Contributed to a 60% rise in First-Class graduates and 55% rise in Second-Class Upper Division graduates in his department since 2020
  • Pioneered the introduction of climate change, renewable energy, and sustainability modules into the curriculum
  • Played a key role in transitioning FUTA to virtual learning (Zoom) during the COVID-19 pandemic — an initiative that earned him the respect of university management.

He currently teaches postgraduate courses including Ecotoxicology, Environmental Modification, Environmental Impact Assessment, Climate Change Biology, and more. His teaching is practical, research-informed, and designed to raise the next generation of environmental scientists who can solve real Nigerian and African problems.

“This role grants me the opportunity to raise the next generation of Environmental Scientists in Nigeria.” — Dr. Babajide Milton Macaulay

The Commonwealth Scholarship: The Catalyst That Changed Everything

Babajide is a three-time Commonwealth Scholar — a rare and prestigious achievement.

  • 2012: MSc Sustainable Environmental Management, University of Greenwich, UK (Distinction, Best MSc Project Award)
  • 2015: PhD Environmental Geochemistry and Geomicrobiology, University of Manchester, UK
  • 2024/2025: MSc Carbon Management (Distance Learning), University of Edinburgh, UK (ongoing)

These scholarships did more than fund his education. They gave him global exposure, world-class research training, international credibility, and a burning desire to give back.

The PhD in particular became “the vehicle for the public credibility and social trust I enjoy today.” It opened doors, attracted respect, and multiplied his influence — especially on LinkedIn, where his following grew from 5,000 to over 35,000+ in four years, with 80% of iLLUMANIA clients coming through that platform.

Research That Moved from Paper to Policy

In 2016, while still building his academic career, Babajide collaborated with an undergraduate student to investigate medical waste management practices in health facilities in Akure, Ondo State.

The findings were alarming: poor segregation, lack of pre-treatment, inappropriate storage, and unsafe disposal. Many facilities had policies on paper but failed in practice.

Instead of stopping at publication, Babajide took the findings to the Director of the Waste Management Board in Ondo State. Using communication and advocacy skills honed during his Commonwealth Scholarship, he presented a compelling case.

The result? The Ondo State Medical Waste Management Bill was pushed through the State House of Assembly and signed into law by the Governor in 2019. Today, it is prohibited for healthcare facilities in Ondo State to dispose of medical waste with household waste.

This is research with teeth — research that protects public health and the environment.

He has also led work on groundwater arsenic contamination, microplastic pollution in drinking water and aquatic systems, bioremediation of oil spills, and is now pioneering “waste energy” solutions for a biocircular economy.

Google Scholar metrics (as of recent data): 494 citations, h-index 7.

The Serial Entrepreneur Building Systems for African Progress

Babajide does not just teach and research — he builds.

iLLUMANIA (Founded 2018)

An educational consulting platform that has guided over 250 African students (from Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Botswana, South Africa, and beyond) to win international postgraduate scholarships. These scholarships have attracted approximately US$10 million in benefits.

He later launched the Scholarship Accelerator Programme (SAP) — an online school that has already trained over 200 young Africans.

He also authored “Scholar’s Bible” — a practical, experience-based guide to winning scholarships, drawn from his own journey of winning 14 scholarships and fellowships in 20 years. The Vice-Chancellor of FUTA described it as “a legacy of mentorship and impact.”

Wadi (Co-founded 2022)

A digital platform connecting African researchers to laboratory equipment, resources, training, community, and funding using geolocation technology. It addresses one of the biggest barriers to quality research in Africa: access to tools.

Wadi has already attracted significant investment and is helping final-year students, postgraduate researchers, and lecturers across the continent.

Rubbicon (Current flagship project)

Babajide is leading a team to build what could become Sub-Saharan Africa’s first commercial-scale privately-owned waste conversion company. Rubbicon will turn organic waste into biomethane (CNG) and biofertiliser — creating clean energy, jobs, and a circular economy solution while tackling waste and climate challenges.

This vision is being supercharged by his new MSc in Carbon Management at Edinburgh, which gives him the policy, economics, and carbon finance knowledge needed to scale such ventures and attract green financing.

Leadership Beyond the Classroom

Babajide’s influence extends to governance and national development:

  • Member, Governing Council, Nigerian University of Technology and Management (NUTM)
  • Board Member, Scholarly (USA)
  • Member, Board of Trustees, Boys Without Borders NG
  • Head of Training and Scholarships in Africa, Women For Equality, Inclusion and Sustainability Foundation (WEISF)
  • Recently joined FUTA’s Student Entrepreneurial Committee

He has received national and international recognition, including the Royal African Leadership Award presented by the Ooni of Ife and Nigeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports.

A Heart for Mentorship and Legacy

What truly sets Dr. Macaulay apart is his deliberate commitment to multiplication.

He does not hoard knowledge. He packages it into books, training programmes, platforms, and personal mentorship. Whether through iLLUMANIA, SAP, or one-on-one guidance, he is creating pathways for the next generation — especially those from low-income or remote backgrounds who would otherwise never dream of Oxford, Manchester, or Edinburgh.

“I am most proud of myself for being the reason a brilliant student from a remote community in Nigeria gains access to globally recognised universities abroad (at no cost) to better his career and family’s fortune. This, indeed, is my most significant impact on my community.”

The Man Behind the Titles

Babajide Milton Macaulay holds:

  • Executive MBA – Quantic School of Business and Technology (95.5%)
  • PhD – University of Manchester
  • MSc – University of Greenwich (Distinction)
  • B.Tech Biology – FUTA (First Class, CGPA 4.64/5.00)

He is a Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society, a proud alumnus, and a man of deep faith who sees his achievements as opportunities for service.
